What is the difference between third-party and comprehensive insurance?

Written by the Dubai Motor Insure editorial team · Last updated 10 September 2026

Third party liability pays for damage and injury you cause to others and nothing towards your own vehicle. Comprehensive includes that same liability cover and additionally pays to repair your own vehicle, subject to the excess and the policy terms.

In more detail

The decision usually comes down to what it would cost you to repair or replace your own car after an at-fault accident. If that figure is one you could not comfortably absorb, comprehensive is the more sensible cover.

Vehicle value matters too. As a car ages and its market value falls, the gap between the two premiums narrows in relative terms and many owners move to third party. There is no fixed age at which this becomes correct — it depends on the vehicle and on your own tolerance for the risk.

Conditions and exceptions

  • Comparing the two only on premium is misleading; compare excess, repair arrangement and exclusions at the same time.
  • Financed vehicles are commonly required by the lender to carry comprehensive cover.

Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
