Third Party Car Insurance in the UAE
Third party liability is the minimum motor cover required to register a vehicle in the UAE. It protects other road users from the consequences of an accident you cause — it does not pay for damage to your own car. This page sets out what it does and does not do, so you can judge whether it fits your vehicle.
What third party insurance means
The 'third party' is anyone other than you (the first party) and your insurer (the second party). The policy responds when you are legally liable for injury to another person or damage to their property while driving the insured vehicle. The limits, conditions and exclusions that apply are set out in the policy wording issued by the insurer.
Who typically chooses it
It is generally not suitable for a financed or leased vehicle, since finance agreements normally require comprehensive cover, nor for a new car whose replacement cost you could not absorb.
- Owners of older vehicles where a comprehensive premium plus excess is disproportionate to the car's market value.
- Owners of vehicles that insurers will no longer cover comprehensively because of age.
- Drivers who could absorb the cost of repairing or replacing their own vehicle.
Third party versus comprehensive
Comprehensive cover includes third party liability and adds own-damage protection subject to policy terms. The practical test is simple: add the annual comprehensive premium to the own-damage excess, and compare that total with what your car is realistically worth today. If the total is a large share of the vehicle's value, third party liability becomes the more proportionate option.

Frequently asked questions
What does third party car insurance cover?
It responds to injury or damage you cause to other people and their property while driving the insured vehicle, within the limits and terms of the policy. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle.
Is third party insurance enough to register my car?
Third party liability is the legal minimum required for registration in the UAE. Whether it is enough for your situation depends on the value of your vehicle and whether it is financed.
Can I upgrade from third party to comprehensive later?
You can request comprehensive cover at renewal, or mid-term subject to the insurer's agreement. Availability depends on the vehicle's age, condition and an inspection where required.
Will third party cover a stolen car?
No. Theft of your own vehicle is not covered by third party liability. That is an own-damage benefit available under comprehensive policies where stated on the schedule.
Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
