Car Insurance Renewal in the UAE

Renewal is the one moment each year when you can review your cover and test the market without penalty. This page explains when to start, what to check on the renewal offer, and how to switch insurer without creating a gap in cover.

Start before expiry, not on the day

Your registration cannot be renewed without a valid insurance certificate covering the registration period, and driving after expiry leaves you both uninsured and exposed to penalties. Beginning three to four weeks early gives you time to compare properly instead of accepting whatever offer arrives by SMS on the last day.

What to review on the renewal offer

  • Has the premium changed, and is the change explained by your claims history or by repricing?
  • Is the sum insured still aligned with the car's current market value?
  • Has the excess or the repair network changed since last year?
  • Have add-ons been added or removed without you requesting it?
  • Is agency repair still included, or has the vehicle passed the insurer's agency-repair age limit?

Keeping your no-claim discount

Claim-free years are usually recognised with a discount, but a new insurer will normally want evidence. Request a no-claim certificate or claims history letter from your outgoing insurer before the policy lapses — it is much harder to obtain afterwards. Avoid any gap between policies, as a lapse can reset the recognised claim-free period.

Reassessing the cover type at renewal

As a vehicle ages, the balance between comprehensive and third party liability shifts. Compare the comprehensive premium plus excess against the vehicle's current market value each year and decide deliberately, rather than carrying last year's choice forward by default.

Documents usually required

  • Emirates ID (front and back)
  • UAE driving licence (front and back)
  • Mulkiya / vehicle registration card
  • Your current policy schedule
  • No-claim certificate from the outgoing insurer, if switching

Individual insurers may ask for additional documents depending on the vehicle and driver profile.

How the process works

  1. 1Send us your current policy schedule and vehicle details three to four weeks before expiry.
  2. 2We review the existing cover and identify the options available for the coming year.
  3. 3You receive the comparison with premium, excess, repair network and exclusions.
  4. 4Once you choose, the new policy is issued to start the day the current one ends.
  5. 5Use the new certificate for registration renewal with your emirate's authority.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start my car insurance renewal?

Three to four weeks before your policy or registration expires. That leaves time to compare options and to obtain a no-claim certificate if you are switching insurer.

Can I change insurer when I renew?

Yes. You are not obliged to renew with your current insurer. Make sure the new policy starts the day the old one ends so there is no gap in cover.

What happens if my policy expires?

You cannot legally drive or renew your vehicle registration without valid cover, and a lapse can affect the no-claim discount recognised by a new insurer. Arrange replacement cover before the expiry date.

Will my premium go down if I have not claimed?

Claim-free years usually attract a discount, but the premium also reflects the vehicle's changing value and the insurer's own repricing. Ask for the no-claim discount to be shown explicitly on the quotation.

Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
