Car Insurance in the UAE — Get a Motor Insurance Quote

Motor insurance is mandatory in the UAE and is checked whenever a vehicle is registered or renewed. This page explains the cover types available, what insurers assess, the documents you will need, and how to request a quotation for your vehicle.

Why motor insurance is required

Every vehicle on UAE roads must carry at least third party liability insurance. The licensing authority in your emirate verifies the insurance certificate electronically when registration is issued or renewed, and the insurance period must cover the registration period being applied for. Driving without valid cover exposes you to penalties and leaves you personally exposed to the cost of an accident.

The cover types available

What a comprehensive policy includes beyond own damage differs between insurers. Always confirm inclusions against the policy schedule issued to you rather than a marketing summary.

  • Third party liability — the legal minimum, covering injury or damage you cause to others.
  • Comprehensive — third party liability plus damage to your own vehicle, subject to the policy terms, exclusions and excess.
  • Optional extensions such as GCC/Oman cover, off-road cover, replacement vehicle or roadside assistance, where the insurer offers them.

What insurers assess

Insurers weight these factors differently, which is why the same vehicle and driver can attract very different premiums. Comparing several quotations for an identical specification is the most reliable way to see the real market range.

  • Current market value, make, model and age of the vehicle.
  • Driver age, licence duration and claims history.
  • Type of cover, excess level and repair network selected.
  • Vehicle use — private, commercial, ride-hailing or delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Is car insurance mandatory in the UAE?

Yes. A vehicle cannot be registered or have its registration renewed in the UAE without a valid motor insurance certificate covering the registration period.

What is the minimum cover I need?

Third party liability is the legal minimum. It covers injury or damage you cause to others but not damage to your own vehicle.

Does my UAE policy cover me in other emirates?

A UAE motor policy applies across the UAE regardless of the emirate the vehicle is registered in. Cover in Oman or other GCC countries is a separate extension.

How long does it take to arrange a policy?

Once the insurer has your documents and has accepted the risk, issuance is usually quick. Timing depends on the insurer, the vehicle and whether an inspection is required.

Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
