What is an insurance excess or deductible?

Written by the Dubai Motor Insure editorial team · Last updated 10 September 2026

The excess, also called the deductible, is the amount you contribute towards each own-damage claim before the insurer pays the rest. It applies per claim, not per policy year.

In more detail

Because the excess reduces the insurer's exposure, a policy with a higher excess normally carries a lower premium. That trade-off is only worthwhile if you could comfortably pay the excess at the moment you need to claim.

The excess is shown on the policy schedule. Some policies apply a different, higher excess in defined situations — for example a young or newly licensed driver, or damage occurring outside the UAE.

Conditions and exceptions

  • Third party liability claims made against your policy do not normally involve your own-damage excess.
  • Additional excesses for specific circumstances are insurer-specific — read the schedule rather than assuming a single figure.

Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
