Used cars: arrange cover before the transfer
Ownership transfer generally cannot be completed without a valid policy in the buyer's name. Arrange the quotation before the transfer appointment so the process is not delayed at the counter.
The seller's policy does not transfer to you. Treat it as a new policy in your name, priced against your own driver profile.
Older vehicles and cover availability
Many insurers restrict comprehensive cover once a vehicle passes a certain age, or require an inspection first. Where comprehensive is unavailable, third party liability remains the legal minimum and can still be arranged.
Imported vehicles
Declare the vehicle's import history accurately. Undisclosed prior structural damage is a frequent cause of claim disputes.
- Import and customs documentation is normally required in addition to the standard documents.
- A physical inspection is common, particularly for vehicles imported after accident repair.
- Parts availability affects both eligibility and pricing for less common models.
- Specification differences from GCC-standard vehicles may affect underwriting.
Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
