Renewal

How to renew car insurance in Dubai

Start before the registration expiry, not after

In Dubai, vehicle registration is administered by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Registration renewal requires a valid insurance certificate covering the registration period, plus a passed vehicle test where the vehicle's age requires one.

Beginning three to four weeks before expiry gives you time to compare options properly instead of accepting whatever arrives by SMS on the final day. Driving without valid insurance or registration exposes you to fines and to being uninsured in an accident.

Review the renewal offer critically

  • Has the premium changed, and does the change reflect your claims history or just repricing?
  • Has the excess or the repair network changed from last year?
  • Is the sum insured still aligned with the car's current market value? An over-stated value costs you premium; an under-stated value can reduce a claim settlement.
  • Have any add-ons been added or dropped without you asking?

Switching insurer at renewal

You are not obliged to renew with the same insurer. If you switch, obtain a no-claim certificate from the outgoing insurer so your claim-free years are recognised, and make sure the new policy starts the day the old one ends so there is no gap in cover.

Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
