Used Car Insurance in UAE

Buying a pre-owned vehicle changes how the insurer views the risk: the value is assessed on the market rather than an invoice, and an inspection may be requested before comprehensive cover is issued.

How value is assessed

For a used car the insurer works from an estimated market value based on make, model, year, mileage and condition. Agreeing that figure at the outset matters, because it is the basis of any total-loss settlement and it influences the premium.

Ownership transfer

A motor policy in the UAE follows the vehicle registration. When ownership transfers, the previous owner's policy does not simply carry over to you — new cover is arranged in the buyer's name before the transfer is completed at the licensing authority.

Inspections and photographs

Insurers frequently ask for photographs or a physical inspection before issuing comprehensive cover on an older vehicle, so that pre-existing damage is recorded and excluded from future claims. This is routine and does not indicate a problem with the car.

When third party may make more sense

As a vehicle ages, the comprehensive premium can become large relative to the car's remaining value. Some owners of older cars choose third party liability instead. That is a judgement about what you could afford to replace yourself, not a rule — we can quote both so you can compare.

  • Comprehensive protects your own vehicle as well as third parties.
  • Third party liability is the legal minimum and covers others only.
  • Compare the annual premium against the car's realistic market value.

Documents usually required

  • Emirates ID (front and back)
  • UAE driving licence (front and back)
  • Mulkiya / vehicle registration card, or the purchase invoice for a new car
  • Previous policy or no-claim certificate, where available
  • Passport and visa page, where the insurer requests it

Individual insurers may ask for additional documents depending on the vehicle and driver profile.

How the process works

  1. 1Send us the vehicle and driver details, or complete the online quotation form.
  2. 2We identify which insurers can consider that vehicle and driver profile.
  3. 3You receive the available options with cover terms, excess and exclusions set out plainly.
  4. 4You choose an option and the insurer issues the policy and certificate.
  5. 5The certificate is used for registration or renewal with your emirate's authority.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer the seller's insurance to my name?

Policies are issued to a named insured against a registered vehicle. In practice a new policy is arranged in the buyer's name; any refund on the seller's policy is a matter between the seller and their insurer.

Why does the insurer want to inspect the car?

To record existing damage before comprehensive cover starts. It protects both sides when a later claim is assessed.

Is there an age limit for comprehensive cover?

Insurers set their own limits on vehicle age and condition, and they differ. Where one insurer declines, another may still consider the vehicle.

Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
