Electric Car Insurance in UAE
Electric vehicles are underwritten as motor risks like any other car, but the battery, the high-voltage system and the repair network raise questions worth settling before you buy a policy rather than after a claim.
The battery is the biggest single component
On most EVs the traction battery represents a large share of the vehicle's value. Ask how the policy treats battery damage after an accident, whether a leased battery is handled differently, and how gradual degradation — which is a wear item, not accident damage — is excluded.
Who is allowed to repair it
High-voltage systems require trained technicians and approved equipment, so the list of workshops able to repair an EV is shorter than for a petrol car. Confirm the insurer's repair network can actually handle your model before relying on it.
Charging equipment and home installation
A home wallbox or portable charger is not automatically part of the motor policy. If you want it covered, ask whether the insurer offers it as an extension or whether it belongs on a home policy instead.
Driver profile still drives the price
Vehicle value, driver age, licence duration and claims history remain the main factors, exactly as with a combustion car. Being electric does not by itself make cover cheaper or more expensive — insurers price the specific model and driver.
Documents usually required
- Emirates ID (front and back)
- UAE driving licence (front and back)
- Mulkiya / vehicle registration card, or the purchase invoice for a new car
- Previous policy or no-claim certificate, where available
- Passport and visa page, where the insurer requests it
Individual insurers may ask for additional documents depending on the vehicle and driver profile.
How the process works
- 1Send us the vehicle and driver details, or complete the online quotation form.
- 2We identify which insurers can consider that vehicle and driver profile.
- 3You receive the available options with cover terms, excess and exclusions set out plainly.
- 4You choose an option and the insurer issues the policy and certificate.
- 5The certificate is used for registration or renewal with your emirate's authority.
Frequently asked questions
Is battery degradation covered?
Gradual loss of range is wear and tear and is normally excluded. Accidental damage to the battery pack is treated under the policy terms, which vary by insurer.
Can any workshop repair an electric car?
No. High-voltage repairs need certified technicians, so the approved network is narrower. Check it covers your model.
Do I need a special policy for an EV?
No, it is a standard motor policy. The details worth checking are the battery treatment, repair network and any charging equipment extension.
Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
