How to Choose Car Insurance in UAE
There is no single 'best' motor policy in the UAE, because the right cover depends on your vehicle, your driving and what you would find expensive to pay yourself. This page sets out the criteria that actually differentiate one policy from another.
Start with the cover, not the price
Two quotations for the same car can differ because one includes agency repair, a lower excess or passenger cover and the other does not. Compare the schedules line by line before comparing the premiums, otherwise you are comparing different products.
The five things worth checking
- Excess — what you pay on each claim, and whether it differs for young or new drivers.
- Repair network — agency workshop, insurer-approved garage, or your choice.
- Exclusions — off-road, commercial use, driver restrictions, geographical limits.
- Add-ons — replacement vehicle, roadside assistance, GCC extension, windscreen.
- Claims handling — how a claim is reported and how quickly repairs are authorised.
Why we do not publish a 'number one' insurer
Ranking insurers as best or cheapest would be a claim we cannot support: outcomes depend on the vehicle, the driver and the individual claim. What we can do is set out the options for your specific case and explain the differences plainly.
Where a broker fits
A broker approaches several insurers with the same information so that the options you see are genuinely comparable, and explains the terms before you commit. You remain free to buy directly from any insurer.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cheapest policy a bad idea?
Not necessarily — but check what has been removed to reach that price: excess level, repair network and add-ons are the usual differences.
How many quotations should I compare?
Enough to see the market range for your vehicle. What matters more is that each quotation is for the same cover basis.
Does a broker cost me more?
Brokers are normally remunerated by the insurer through commission included in the premium. Ask about remuneration if you want it explained.
Important: The information on this page is general guidance about motor insurance in the UAE and is not a policy document or a guarantee of cover. Cover, benefits, exclusions, excess amounts and pricing differ between insurers and depend on your vehicle, driver profile and the policy wording issued to you. Always read the policy schedule and terms issued by the insurer before purchasing.
